Las Vegas is justifiably renowned for its food. Literally any type of gustatory delight can be found here as you dine at massive casino buffets, greasy spoon diners, or Michelin star-worthy restaurants. Vegas is a gastronomic paradise for the gourmand or the simply hungry.
However, there is no faster way to bring your Vegas festivities to a screeching halt than contracting food poisoning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate there are over 47 million food poisoning cases in the US each year and the symptoms can be agony – nausea, vomiting, dizziness, stomach cramping, fever, and diarrhea. I personally see many instances every year.
If you suffer food poisoning, you certainly will not want to spend a day at the tables or a night drinking. Use the tips below to avoid food-borne illness during your time in Vegas and be able to stay focused on having fun.
You want to make sure that any restaurant you visit is handling your food properly. Of course, it’s not realistic to look over the chef’s shoulder to ensure this, so do the next best thing. Check the Las Vegas health department ratings and don’t accept anything less than an A rating. Las Vegas has plenty of restaurants to choose from that make the grade, so you should easily be able to find safe cuisine of any variety.
Vegas is home to some outstanding sushi restaurants and, when properly stored and handled, raw fish and shellfish can be relatively safe. However, there are some meats you should never eat raw or undercooked. These include pork and chicken. In fact, undercooked chicken is the main vector for salmonella, which is responsible for a good portion of all food poisoning cases. Any chicken you consume should always be white or dark on the inside and out, never purple, red, or pink.
A seasoned, rare steak is a delight for most. But when it comes to ground meat like hamburgers, always make sure your order is cooked all the way through. This is because bacteria such as E. coli can be introduced during the grinding process and colonize the raw beef.
There should be no pink to the meat, and any juices should run clear rather than bloody. Harmful bacteria usually only exist on the surface of steaks and are killed during cooking, but this is not true of ground meat. So if you want to enjoy a burger, make sure it serves its full time on the grill first.
If you do come down with food poisoning, it can quickly ruin your time in Vegas. Unfortunately, signs of food poisoning, with the exception of fever, closely mimic hangover symptoms.
